Eighty-four-year-old Stan Coates is sharp as a tack, prone to the odd fall, and absolutely not moving into a senior living facility. Not unless he can bring his late wife’s teaspoon collection with him.
When his grandson starts filming Stan’s hilarious, heart-wrenching rants about the spoons, and his scathing reviews of every aged care facility he tours, the clips go viral. Stan becomes an unlikely hero for elders’ rights, one spoon at a time.
Spoons is the new solo play from three-time Melbourne International Comedy Festival “Most Outstanding Show” nominee Damian Callinan, blending his trademark character work with dark humour and real pathos. It’s a story about dignity, independence, and what it means to be part of a fading generation, told with equal parts laughs and heart.
You’ll know Damian Callinan’s face from The Newsreader (ABC TV), as the lead in cult hit The Emu War, and as the creator and star of The Merger, now streaming on Amazon Prime. On stage, his work has earned three Most Outstanding Show nominations at MICF and a Best Comedy Award at Perth Fringe World for Double Feature.
Spoons premiered at the 2026 Melbourne International Comedy Festival at Arts Centre Melbourne, where it played to acclaim, before Damian brings it to Wonthaggi.
