Maintaining a local icon for generations to enjoy

Bass Coast Shire Council has commenced a major upgrade of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system at The Union Theatre in Wonthaggi from Monday, 2 February 2026, helping to ensure year-round comfort for patrons and support the long-term operation of this much-loved community venue.

The Union Theatre celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2025, marking a century of entertainment, performances and community gatherings. This latest investment will help future-proof the historic venue by replacing ageing infrastructure and reducing the risk of unplanned breakdowns that can disrupt events and performances.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, said the upgrade reflects Council’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality cultural facilities for the community.

“The Union Theatre is a treasured part of Wonthaggi’s identity and cultural life. After celebrating 100 years last year, this upgrade is about making sure the venue remains comfortable, reliable and fit for purpose for decades to come,” Cr Halstead said.

“Modernising the HVAC system will improve the experience for audiences and performers alike, while also helping to prevent unexpected system failures that could impact shows and community events.”

While Council acknowledges the temporary closure may cause some short-term disruption, the upgrade has been carefully scheduled. Arts Centre programming is sometimes confirmed more than a year in advance, with artists touring nationally and internationally, meaning an upgrade of this scale requires pragmatic planning to align with tendering, construction timelines and existing bookings.

During this period, the community is encouraged to continue enjoying performances and events at Bass Coast Cultural Venues’ other venue, Berninneit, Cowes, which will maintain a vibrant year-round program of arts and culture.

Don't miss out on tickets when The Union Theatre returns!

Looking ahead, we’re currently developing an exciting program to celebrate the venue’s reopening, including Lights on Wonthaggi — a series of free and low-cost events for all ages. Following the popularity of Berninneit’s Beyond the Bricks tours, the program will include exclusive behind-the-scenes building tours, responding to strong community curiosity about what happens behind the curtain.
