Artist Statement:
This project 'Intertwine series - Drift' explores the understanding of material, processes of making, and the relationship between human and environment. Commenting on the impact of consumerism and the strong effect on marine eco-system, the work emphasises on the use of recycled fishnets, colourful threads and handcraft textile techniques in making, developing the site-specific work to enhance the awareness and understanding of our unique environment.
In response to the kelp gardens and abundant marine life at Bass Coast, the work applies diverse green, blue, and fluid outlines to reveal a sensorial atmosphere of the underwater world. Through researching, revisiting, and redrawing the elements of water flow, ocean plants, rock ledges and gullies, this project integrates the fishing net with the vivid movements of sea waves, which reflects a poetic, floating, but ambiguous scene of water.
Acknowledgements:
The base fishing nets in this project were supported by the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Yabby-Net Swap Program. The wildlife-friendly program includes recycling and repurposing of 20,000 opera-house nets to protect air breathing wildlife, such as native water rats(rakali), platypus and turtles.
